A brownie is two materials in a single object — and that is what makes it hard.
On top there is the crust: smooth, glossy, with the fine crackle of something that baked and split as it cooled. Underneath there is the crumb: porous, dry, matte, its air bubbles broken open. One returns light, the other swallows it. Building each separately takes work; making them coexist in the same piece, with the right transition between them, is where realism is won or lost.
That is why the key image is the broken piece. The fracture is the only place where crust and crumb appear together, and that is where the eye confirms — or rejects — that this is food.
Crumbs follow a rule of their own. Too few and the scene reads too clean to be real. Too many and the product looks dirty. The right amount sits in a narrow range, and that range shifts with the framing and the amount of product in shot.
The final frame shows the same compositions as clay renders: geometry, with no material and no colour. That is where form gets resolved, before any finish comes in.
